Strawberries, SA T20 Cricket & Santa

November 8, 2014

Carolyn must grow strawberries in the garden (It’s a fact). Her 10 little plants, purchased back in September from the local Crafer’s Garden Centre, have managed to produce some tasty little treats! So far the harvest has included 12 red, ripe berries. A few more are just filling out.

This past Wednesday, we were treated to an International T20 Cricket match at the SA Adelaide Oval. Thanks to our great friends Pete and Tracey, we sat front and centre in the 5th row to see Australia take on South Africa. It was quite the spectacle being so close to the players and the fireworks and flame throwers that went off at ever 4 and 6 point hit. Despite the Aussie loss, we stayed until the end of the match and enjoyed a beautiful evening walk back along the River Torrens.

Another Aussie first for us was the shock of Christmas promotions beginning on October 1! Yes, the stores have been full of decorations, advent calendars, candies and Christmas colours. People have already started to put up their trees and lights.

Adelaide has a strong tradition of welcoming Christmas with a full-on parade. Today, we took part in it. The Credit Union Christmas Pageant winds its way through the central business district and is viewed by over 300,000 people each year. Families and on-lookers start lining the streets as early as 6am for the 9:30am Golden Whistle Kick-off. We managed to take out spots at 9:29am, just as the parade started. Sidewalk chalk is provided for kids to decorate the main streets in colour and designs. The 84 floats are used year-after-year and a new float is unveiled each year. One float featured a carved horse that is celebrating its 100 birthday! We kept our eyes pealed for float #66 as it featured Wendy and Nigel’s daughter, Alice, as well as the local Channel 9 TV weather lady,Virginia Langeberg. You can view both in the picture below!

You think Christmas comes early to the shops – just wait for Easter goodies. They are on the shelves just by the beginning of the New Year!!

      Wow! That’s incredible!
The nice thing about Christmas coming so early is that I have started my gift shopping to send back to Canada. We still have to get down to David Jones to visit the Magical Cave, as we have been told it is a “must-see.” When people ask us if there are Christmas pageants in Canada, I reply “Yes, but usually they are indoors at a shopping mall!” ha ha ha
Thanks for commenting Wendy! 🙂 Carolyn

      Hey Cara! Thanks for commenting.
While the weather has reached the 30s, this weekend has been rather nice at around 24. However, it did rain on Sean’s Cricket yesterday but the rain is welcomed as it is extremely dry here at the moment. We miss you too and hope you will find warmer weather in Victoria! Yeah! Carolyn 🙂
